Book Review:
Inspiring
Young People To Want To Learn
by Bertie Ryan Synowiec, M.S.
Our children are a very precious gift to us, only they didn't come with an Owners
Manual and often challenge our patience and understanding as parents and
educators. With great simplicity Inspiring Young People To Want To Learn
provides the reader with specific guidelines and insights that, when delivered
with the language of love and respect, model the lessons of responsible behavior
we want our children to learn. Written as a series of one-line statements
gathered together under ten specific chapter titles, this book uses reflective
listening, words of encouragement and clear choices that empower young people to take responsibility
for the outcome of their own learning and their behavior. Inspired to look
within for answers and personal accolades, they no longer have to be dependent
on someone else outside of themselves for praise and approval and they can truly
become their own person, living out their own purpose and mission in life. This
is a book that will remain close at hand, as an important reminder of those
phrases that empower individuals, including the reader, to be self-directed and motivated.

Bertie Synowiec has given us more than a book! It is an inspiring reading
experience that is packed with fresh insights on one of the most exciting
challenges: inspiring youth to learn. Don't start underlining powerful statements or you'll underline most of the book! Charlie

Your program, Inspiring Young People To Want To Learn, was
presented to us at the beginning of my appointment as principal of Sayre Middle
School in Philadelphia. I knew the importance of self-esteem in the entire educational process and you and this book helped the staff become
'self-esteem builders.' You also created an awareness in us for the need to
monitor our own self-esteem, especially when we worked with children. As you can easily see in the report I sent you, the results in one year showed
significant gains in our student's test scores as well as their attendance. That
first year was exhausting, but the hard work really paid off since the students
made such great gains in their achievement levels. Thank you for leading the way
with words of encouragement that empower self-worth and inspire young people to
want to learn! Sophie W. Hayward, M.A., Special Assistant Task Force New
Jersey Department of Education, Camden City School District
Understanding what you express as "hurting people hurt other people,"
helps us realize that we must not allow ourselves to constantly be in a reactive
mode, responding only to student behavior and not to the person on the inside. Conversely, we must be in a proactive mode, reflectively
listening to their concerns as they sort things out. This changes their
perception of their situation, as they see the lessons learned and resolve the hurts that influence their behavior. Thank you for sharing your
wisdom with such simplicity, as we continue Inspiring Young People,
our greatest natural resource, To Want To Learn. Jessie V.
Randall, M.A., former Middle School Supervisor, Department of Guidance and
Counseling, Detroit Public Schools
So often in education the focus is on what is not being done rather than on the
exceptional instructional qualities that every teacher carries with them into
the classroom. Inspiring Young People to Want to Learn is a book
that belongs in every classroom in the country. All of our experiences in life
give us an opportunity to learn and Bertie's book inspires individuals to want
to become full participants in that learning process as they begin to see their
place in this world. So clearly written, we also plan to use this book as the
text for our basic
parenting classes. Jim Ashton, Office of Compensatory Programs Safe and
Drug Free Schools, Virginia Department of Education
Inspiring Young People to Want to Learn contains a set of strong guidelines to
assist both the parent and the teacher in setting goals and boundaries for
children, as they guide them along the path that leads them to take
responsibility for the outcome of their lives. Patricia M. Casey,
Elementary School Educator
Bertie's book inspires both the teacher and the student to enjoy life with more
of a three hundred and sixty degree view, the center of which is LOVE.
Reflecting that love from within begins the restoration of health, as we take
responsibility for our own growth and change. Bobbie Doscher, D.C., Oklahaven
Children's Chiropractic Center Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Inspiring Young People to Want to Learn is what Bertie does best!
As my mom and my friend, she never stopped believing in me, as I challenged
myself to adapt my learning style to the instructional style of others. I am The
Pro at Hard Work , she writes about and knowing that I alone could make
it happen, I am now a college graduate! Daniel Ryan Synowiec, Computer Aided
Design Graduate, Eastern Michigan University
